Mr Ermanno Scerrati
BSc MBBS

Ermanno Scerrati is a senior consultant eye surgeon with the HerefordVision Surgical Group, with a busy NHS practice based at Wye Valley NHS Trust, where he has been the lead clinician for glaucoma surgery since 2018.

In addition to his glaucoma interest, he is fully trained in ‘keyhole’, micro-incision cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), cornea and refractive surgery, and has a long history of excellence in these fields.


Training

Ermanno Scerrati studied medicine at La Sapienza University of Rome, graduating with a First Class degree in Medicine in 1989. He became a specialist in Ophthalmology in the same University in Rome in 1993.

He started subsequent specialist training in a private microsurgery and laser center, the DOMA Rome, with Professor Massimo Gualdi, where he was the Trainer for cataract and refractive surgery, passing key skills on to the next generation of eye surgeons. He started his career as a consultant ophthalmologist at the Fabia Mater private hospital in Rome in 2002 and from 2003 at the Villa Tiberia Hospital, also in Rome. In 2005, he was proud to return to the DOMA Laser Centre as Consultant Ophthalmologist and by 2009 was appointed as the Lead of the Eye Unit in Pierangeli Hospital, Pescara.

While lead clinician at Pescara, he found time to attend the HB Guven Klinik in Baku, Azerbaijan for a week per month, helping to develop a sustainable eye service in a challenging environment, as well as carrying out cataract and glaucoma procedures with Mrs Faxriyya Yusifzade.

From 2014 to 2016, he worked at Villa Anna Hospital San Benedetto del Tronto with Mr Viardo Goffi and before leaving Italy in January 2016, he attended Villa Ulivella Hospital, Firenze for subspecialist training in vitreoretinal surgery with Professor Silvio Zuccarini. The GMC granted him license to practise in the UK and full specialist registration in 2016, and he started work as consultant ophthalmologist at the CareUK Emerson Green Treatment Centre, Bristol with Mrs Teresa Anthony.

In March 2018, he was appointed as consultant ophthalmologist with special interest for glaucoma and cataract surgery at Wye Valley NHS Trust, Hereford.

Personal life: He loves living in Hereford with his wife and young daughter. In addition, they have adopted a Tanzanian boy, who is waiting to join the family.
